During a recent business marketing seminar, the keynote speaker from General Electric recommended a book and I jotted down the title. Typically I'm not into goal-setting books because I've read hundreds in the past, but this one really surprised me. It was packed with note-worthy tips to support any type of self-improvement plan.

Whether you're interested in weight loss, getting organized, finding a way out of debt or even changing jobs, Ryan's book is short, easy to read and uses a practical, tangible approach. She focused on SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Sound. She also recommends writing a detailed "contract" for what you want to change over the next three months and a "growth story" so that your brain can visualize the positive journey from beginning to end.

The part of the book I liked best, was the chapter regarding the "power of the imperfect." "Studies have shown that dieters who deal constructively with a lapse are more likely to lose weight and keep it off than those who beat themselves up after a mistake." This book reminded me to consider every mini step toward change as practice toward my achievement. This allowed me to take the pressure off the aspect of success or failure and just enjoy the experience of change much more than before.
